During January and February vast herds of zebra and wildebeest are spread out across the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti. Their young are born here where they spend a few weeks gaining strength for the long migration north. Zebras and wildebeest often gather by the hundreds at Serengeti water holes. Then, responding to some unknown signal, they all fly to a distant field, wait a few minutes, and return to repeat the ritual.
