The intricately choreographed bubblenet feeding technique of the humpback whales is fascinating to watch. Each member of the feeding group has an established role and position. One blows a ring of bubbles around a school of herring while others vocalize to scare or confuse the fish. Others herd the fish upward through the cylinder of bubbles rising to the surface. At a signal from the leader, all of the whales lunge upward through the school, mouths wide open, capturing as many fish as possible as they break the surface of the water.
